Building Resilience in Lviv
How Olena found a sense of control and inner strength during years of profound uncertainty.
My name is Olena and I live in Lviv. The last few years have been incredibly heavy, both emotionally and mentally. Living with constant uncertainty completely changes how you feel about every aspect of your life, from your immediate safety to your long-term future and overall stability.
I used to spend most of my days constantly imagining the worst-case scenarios. My nervous system was always on high alert, reacting to every unexpected sound or piece of news as if it were an immediate threat. It felt like I was living in a state of permanent tension that I could not escape.
Meditation did not remove the external uncertainty of the world around me. However, it helped me immensely to regulate my own internal uncertainty. The first thing I noticed when I started practicing was my own breathing. I realized that my breath was shallow and rapid almost all the time. I had not even noticed how constricted my chest had become until I took a moment to truly sit in silence.
Using a simple sound and a timer, I began practicing slow, deep breathing for just ten minutes every evening. It was a small commitment, but it felt like a lifeline. Gradually, my panic episodes became shorter and less intense. My sleep quality improved and I finally found the strength to stop scrolling through the news late at night, which had only been fueling my anxiety.
Meditation became a small but powerful act of control in a world where so many things are completely uncontrollable. It did not make me naive to the reality of my situation. Instead, it made me much more resilient. It gave me a foundation of inner strength that I didn't know I possessed.
Now, when fear appears, I do not try to fight it or push it away. I simply observe it as it arises. I acknowledge its presence without letting it take over my entire being. And because I no longer struggle against it, I find that the fear passes much faster than it ever did before.
