Finding Silence in Kyoto
Aiko shares her journey from emotional disconnection to inner honesty through a simple daily habit.
My name is Aiko. I live in Kyoto.
From the outside, my life looked calm. I had a stable job, polite coworkers, a quiet apartment. But inside, my mind never stopped.
In Japan, we are taught to endure quietly. To not disturb others. To keep emotions controlled. I followed that rule perfectly and slowly disconnected from myself.
Meditation started as five minutes before sleep. Just breathing with a simple timer and soft rain sound.
At first, nothing happened.
Then something subtle changed.
I began noticing tension in my shoulders before meetings. I noticed when I said 'yes' while meaning 'no.' I noticed how often I suppressed small disappointments.
Meditation didn't make me louder. It made me honest, first with myself.
Now, when stress appears, I see it early. I pause. I breathe. I choose my response more carefully.
I still live in the same city. But I no longer feel trapped inside expectations.
The silence became my private space.
